RUSSIAN WAR CRIMES AND HUMAN RIGHT VIOLATIONS IN THE WAR AGAINST UKRAINE
The use of weapons of mass destruction against civilians is a crime against humanity and a vio-lation of the four Geneva Conventions of 1949. By killing civilians, the aggressor’s forces continue to commit crimes against humanity as de-fined by the Statute of the International Military Tribunal and the Rome Statute of the Interna-tional Criminal Court, cynically disregarding all the requirements of the Geneva Convention relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War. According to these norms, deliberate attacks on civilians who are not directly involved in hostilities are equated to war crimes. The taking of civilian hostages is a direct violation of Articles 3 and 34 of the Geneva Convention with regard to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War, Article 9 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and Article 5 of the European Convention on Human Rights.

For 7 months of the war russian occupiers looted almost 40 Ukrainian museums. According to the authorities, this is done with the aim of destroying Ukrainian culture. This was emphasized by the Minister of Culture of Ukraine Oleksandr Tkachenko. According to the official, losses from the theft and destruction of artifacts and historical sites are estimated at hundreds of millions of euros. It is known that Russian troops stole more than 2,000 exhibits from city museums. Among the most valuable items were ancient icons, a unique handwritten Torah scroll, a 200-year-old Bible and more than 200 medals. In addition to museums, historical places important for the culture of Ukraine are also affected – more than 199 objects in 12 regions were damaged. Among them are churches, buildings of historical and cultural significance, monuments, museums and libraries.
